Hi curly/coily ladies! I see y’all! I see your struggles and they resonate with me because I go through a world of them as well.
I was initially of the opinion that frizz had nothing on me till the weather in my country changed drastically to the cold, dry and dusty harmattan.
My hair spoke to me in multiple ways that things had changed. For the first time ever, I understood what it truly meant to battle the dreaded ‘frizz’ that is known to turn natural curly/coily ladies off.
I soon realized that I was reaping exactly what I had sown into my hair. I hadn’t been big on moisturizing my hair for a few weeks and the weather wasn’t helping matters either.
Hair time became something made of nightmares. I however knew that things could change if only I eliminated laziness and took the necessary steps to rejuvenating my hair! I would be sharing those steps with you today.
First off, let’s define the term Frizz, just for anyone to whom this word might be foreign.
Frizz is hair that does not align with the surrounding hair, but stands up or curls independently, creating a fuzzy or irregular texture. Frizz makes combing curly hair a pain! Apart from the pain of combing dry frizzy hair, hair loss is also a huge possibility, hence the need to combat dry, frizzy hair!
What causes frizz you might ask?
The number one cause of frizz is dry hair! In retrospect, dry hair could occur as a result of many factors including
- Humidity ( weather conditions that promote drying such as humid summer, harmattan and the likes)
- Over washing your hair
- Towel drying your hair with the wrong towel type
- Excessive use of heat stylers or blow dryers
- The constant use of Harsh, frizz enabling hair products.
How then do we battle this Frizzy Hair menance?
Battling frizzy hair isn’t rocket science, neither is it impossible. A few basic hair care changes could go a long way in giving you the curly/coily, hair combing experience of your dreams. Pay attention to the following tips.
Never Comb your hair dry
It is always a recipe for disaster. What you would get with dry hair combing is scalp pain and yanking of your hair strands. Instead, get your hair wet/damp with a good leave in conditioner mixed with a bit of water. Spray it over your curls and gently comb with a wide tooth comb from tip to root. Also try to leave your hair in sections it helps to keep the frizz at bay too.
Protect your hair with a silk bonnet
When you sleep through the night, it is important to ensure your hair does not loose its moisture, else the moisture loss would aid frizz the next morning. If you are too lazy to throw on a silk bonnet (which you shouldn’t be), at the very least make use of a silk pillow case for hair protection please.
Avoid Excessive Heat
Heat use has always been one controversial issue! It has it’s perks, but using it the wrong way such as in blow drying, or for excessive silk presses would dry up your hair super fast and bring on the frizz. Why not go for heatless styling options instead darling.
Don’t Over Wash your hair
There is a thing as over washing your hair people. You don’t want to end up with a dry scalp and dry matted hair. It is always advisable to wash your hair at least once a month and at most twice every month. Of course while remembering to deep condition after your shampoo dears. Please don’t join the wash my hair every other day gang o it would end with premium tears!
Purchase a micro fiber towel
Try to use a micro fiber towel on your delicate curls darling they help a whole lot to protect the hair and keep it healthy while helping to get it’s state from soaking wet to damp faster. Invest in one today and thank me later.
Use appropriate Styling Products
Avoid harsh styling products that increase dryness and instead opt for those that contain film forming humectants and oils such as flaxseed and marshmallow roots in their ingredient listing.
If you Judicously follow these tips, then I dare say your days of hair frizz are over!
Stay ‘Hairlthy’ guys!
