Now lets take both the plantain and potatoes in strides
How to fry plantain
The important things to consider when frying plantain, are your shape and texture preferences.
For example, do you like your plantain cut into big sizes, fairly big or cute/petite sizes? and at what stage of ripening do you like to consume your plantain?
For me, my desired plantain size depends on what occasion the plantain is being made for. If it is perhaps for a party where it is to be served on say, jollof rice, then the cute little sizes would do. However, if it is to be eaten homemade style and paired with some egg sauce then please give me the big, juicy size.
As for the ripening, the sweetest ripening stage for plantain is when it is Very ripe, I didn’t say almost spoilt kind of ripe o, but soft and ripe enough for consumption. For the fit fam crew, the unripe plantain is usually the best pick but it isn’t as sweet as the ripe lot.
Now lets get into the nitty gritty of actually frying the plantain.
STEPS
- Cut your ripe plantain into the desired shape/ size
- Glaze with some salt if you are about that life ( I usually skip this part coz I am not a fan of salt in plantain)
- Get a clean frying pan, add some oil to about 1/3 the pan level and when it has heated up for 5- 10 secs add in your plantain
- Fry on medium heat, making sure to watch it closely and turn both sides of the plantain pieces with a fork till all sides are golden brown
- You could also make use of an air fryer to get the job done.
- Pair your well fried plantain with the yummy egg sauce.
How to fry potatoes
Potatoes are highly nutritious and lit when paired with egg sauce. But of the two variants, I feel that the Irish potato slaps harder with the egg sauce as it is highly delicious!
To fry potatoes well you need to
- Cut your potato into desired size and shape. When pairing with the egg sauce, I usually make use of the typical french fry shape.
- Make sure the oil for frying is hot enough before pouring in your fries
- Make sure you don’t bring the fries out prematurely else they would soak in a lot of oil. Stare gently until all sides are well cooked and brown
- You could also use an air fryer to reduce your oil use/consumption
