Hi loves! If you are back for the concluding part of “Let’s talk primers” then you are most welcome! I am super glad you checked back
So today, the dissection of face primers begins!
Without mincing words, you need to get yourself a dope face primer to showcase that gorgeous face beat.
Remember, primers are like the photoshop of make up, and as we previously mentioned, it acts as a protective barrier between your skin and the make up product.
Just in case you are confused about the kinds of all round face primers to purchase, have no fear! TSJ is here! But before we talk the talk, trust your girl to share her short primer story this one is a true, and unforgettable story.
MY PRIMER STORY
So when I met the love of my life( my hubby) he had hinted from the very beginning of the relationship that this was the real deal. In fact his blood was too hot when he started sampling to see if I would accept a marriage proposal from him. I was like “oga calm down o I ain’t ready, I am still a small girl”
As time flew pass, and I began to hint that I was ready, I knew the proposal was on it’s way. He chose to propose on his birthday in 2017 and he most likely felt I was clueless.
The truth is that I didn’t know where he would propose or how, but I had my suspicions. To gather friends for a birthday that isn’t a round figure is certainly pregnant with other motives lol!
Trust your baby girl!
I fixed my nails, got a hair stylist, and even bought a stunning dress, only to get it totally wrong with my make up.
In my next life! I would spend it all on primers and spare no details.
At this time in my life, I was a make up new bie, so my knowledge base was absolutely flawed. I bought the “cheapest” primer on the block, you know, one of those that promise heaven and earth, but end up messing you up! Till date, I deeply regret it.
“Charlee” As soon as I stepped into the sun like this ehn! It was over! My foundation started to drip and I looked like a clown. I remember that I kept asking my brother (who was meant to accompany me that day) if I looked ok.
Trust him to give me a thumbs up and avoid hurting my feelings , knowing fully well that my face beat was falling apart.
Chai, I patched up the horrible facebeat with plenty powder and headed to the venue. The pictures taken that day were……hmmm, let me just say not up to standard.
So I swore to help ladies out there avoid the same horrible mistake I made on this very day!
So face primers, what’s the deal, The deal is that you need them! For that flawless, stay put look, you absolutely must get one. How do you make a choice though? I would say, go with your skin needs! That is, If you have super large pores, go with a primer that helps to fill in Large pores.
If you have an oily skin, a good matte primer is your best friend. Like wise, if you are a dry skin girl, grab yourself a ni hydrating face primer.
With that being said I feel it’s time to school you on the various available face primer types out there just so you can make informed choices when purchasing one.
And of course, ill’d be helping you out with a list of some great primers out there.
MATTIFYING PRIMERS
By Matte, we are simply referring to something that finishes off dry. For those with oily/ combination skin types, this would be a great asset for prolonging the wear of your foundation.
It is usually advisable to go for a silicone-based kind, as it creates a great mattifying barrier between the skin and makeup products and has the added benefit of blurring and smoothing pores.
Examples of some great mattifying face primers out there include
- Loreal Magic perfecting base primer: This is a mattifying primer that has the added advantage of filling up Large pores. Plus in my opinion, it is quite budget friendly.
- Fenty beauty pro Filt’r mattifying primer: We all know that Rihanna’s beauty brand speaks luxury! Though this particular primer might have a runny consistency, it does well to give that air brushed, photo ready feeling, plus it is really good for those with combination- oily skin.
- Urban decay all nighter face primer: You all know how I feel about the urban decay brand it is called all nighter for a reason! It stays!! And keeps the face oil at bay, however I won’t advise it’s use for Acne prone skin as it could cause break outs for these bunch. Also quite pricy.
- Rimmel London stay matte primer: This silicone based mattifying primer has been an all time favorite for me, my box can never be caught, missing this particular primer as it has definitely grown on me. The fact that it is super budget friendly also gladdens my soul. It definitely sinks into the skin perfectly and provides that matte effect that holds your face beat in place for up to 8 hours straight with no touch ups. Great for oily skin.
- Nars pores and shine control primer: Though high end, this particular primer is great for the oily T zones. It is a light weight formula that helps to reduce shine for long hours.
- Tm essentials: Though a local brand, their products are nothing short of amazing. They are also super budget friendly. This particular home grown primer dries matte, and keeps the oil in check for long hours. It could be used with a translucent powder after application for better effects.
- Becca Mattifying face primer: This primer is the bomb! Let’s call it oil be gone. As a combination skin girl, I can tell you for free that you need this primer in your life. It could be use before and after a face beat to control shine. It works guys although quite pricy.
HYDRATING PRIMERS
These are specially formulated formulas for parched, flaky and dehydrated skin, to soften and make the skin more supple. My dry skinned sisters would do well with hydrating primers. Hydrating formulas usually have a creamy/ milky texture and contain ingredients similar to those found in moisturizers.
To pick a good hydrating primer for dry skin, the list of ingredients could serve as a good lead on the right path. Like I mentioned, they usually have a similar line up with ingredients found in moisturizers such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, shea butter, aloe vera, vitamin E, and lightweight oils that smoothen and brighten the skin, as well as give it a supple finish.
With that being said, I would be listing some hydrating primers that are great for dry skin.
First up
- Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré multifunctional cream: From it’s name, you can tell it’s a French product right? Now the thing about this particular product is that it serves!! Asides being used as a make up base/primer, it could also serve as a moisturizer, a beauty mask, and even for post-shaving care. Amazing, isn’t it?
It is a great buy for those with normal / very dry skin, as it helps to give them a healthier, supple and more radiant look. And the best part is that it is as budget friendly as your pocket size. By this I mean, that they come in different sizes and you can definitely make your choice size based on your budget.
- Milk make up hydro grip primer : This is a gel like formula made to infuse intense hydration and give the skin a super smooth canvas for make up application. It has been shown to keep make up locked in for hours. It is however quite pricy and can be unappealing to those who find it’s consistency sticky.
- NYX Professional Makeup Bare With Me Hydrating Jelly Primer: This is a budget friendly water based primer that hydrates the skin for up to 8 hrs and keeps it supple for make up stay. It is also important to note that it gives a glass like, dewy finish. If you are on a restricted budget, you can definitely go for this.
PORE MINIMIZING PRIMERS
These particular group of primers help to minimize the appearance of fine lines and large pores, creating a smooth and flawless canvas for a gorgeous beat. Some good ones include:
- The La girl pro prep smoothing face primer: It’s an all time fav! It has a thick, fluid like consistency that glides into your skin and gives it the feels. They don’t joke when they call it a “smoothing face primer” it definitely evens out Large pores and makes the face foundation ready. If you battle with Large pores, get one of this and thank me later darling!
- The pore fessional pore minimizing primer: This dependable primer applies easily and creates a beautifully smooth base for make up. You can also use it over makeup to touch up problem areas throughout the day. It can however be quite pricy for some.
- Estée Lauder the Smoother Universal Perfecting Primer : This is a luxurious light weight primer that evens out skin textures and fills in pores, leaving the skin smooth and make up ready. Of course you already know this belongs to the pricy gang.
It is worthy of note, that a few mattifying and even hydrating primers can sometimes double as pore minimizers, in this case they give you the best of both worlds.
COLOUR CORRECTING FACE PRIMERS
These work by providing colours that neutralise the blemish colour on the opposite spectrum of the colour wheel. So basically, the kind of colour correcting primer to get, would depend on the nature/ colour of the blemish.
For example, If you struggle with redness from sensitive skin or even acne, you could use a green correcting primer(which is on the opposite end of the colour spectrum) to neutralize any sign of redness.
I personally don’t own so many of these but a listing of some colour correcting primers out there that others swear work fine include: Smash box photo finish colour correcting primer, the mac prep and prime CC colour correcting SPF 30, the nyx colour correcting primer( comes in different colours)
Yep, that’s it
I do hope that with this post of mine, I have been able to convince you baby girl, to get a great face primer that works well for your skin type. Don’t sleep on this darling! Get one and thank me Later.
