Sometimes I wonder how some meals get their names. French toast and the world renowned English breakfast start becoming interesting and worthy of note from their unique names. Let’s take a quick trip down memory lane and look into the history of these two break fast options before we delve into the preparation/ technical know hows of these meals.
Brief History of French toast
Would it shock you to know that french toast actually never originated from France? It rather has its roots deeply seated in Rome. I know, I was shocked when I got the info too.
The first known recorded recipe for French toast originates from Rome and this was around 300 A.D. The Roman author Apicius included it in his cookbook titled “Cooking and Dinning in imperial Rome”
Contrary to Popular opinion, the French had nothing to do with the invention of this recipe, however popular in France. It was Americans who gave the name “French Toast” to this dish because French Immigrants in America made the dish popular.
This meal has now spread beyound the shores of Rome and even France, and it is a celebrated breakfast world wide.
Brief History of the English Breakfast
The first time I heard someone ask if I wanted the English breakfast, I burst out laughing. I was confused on why this particular breakfast was language specific, however, after some reflection and better understanding I realized that it was so called because this breakfast originated from England, as far back as the 15th century in an English institution known as the gentry.
The gentry were considered to be a distinct social class, which comprised of people with ‘noble and distinguished blood’, landowners and ‘genteel’ families of long descent, this privileged layer of society also counted as senior members of the clergy and the relatives of titled families within its ranks.
They were famous for their breakfast feasts, and the breakfast table served as an opportunity for them to display their wealth.
